Andrea’s workshops

Andrea facilitating a workshop at the Rainbow Serpent Festival, 2009.
Andrea has been teaching regularly for five years and is a sought after workshop facilitator for children and adults. Her workshop description options include:
Traditional Saiidi
Get in touch with the masculine side of your dance with this powerful yet earthy style from Upper Egypt. The Saiidi style involves the use of a cane, twirled about the body in conjunction with grounded but bouncey steps. The workshop explores many interesting cane manoeuvres and dynamic sequences, as well as some dynamic steps that are characteristic to this region which are sure to wow your audiences. A choreography to an authentic saiidi track will be taught; a song featuring the moving mizmar by Omar Faruk Tekbilek.
Intermediate to Advanced level.
Khaleegy
This visually stunning dance style is a wonderful hybrid that draws its influences from Persia, Africa, the Middle East and is derived from ancient trance dances. It is both mesmerising to watch and very enjoyable to perform. Khaleegy is endemic to the Gulf Region – Saudi Arabia , Yemen , Oman , Bahrain , United Arab Emirates and Kuwait – and aside from the very striking costume (thobe nashal), Khaleegy is also admired for its feminine nature, with hair tossing as the key characteristic. This dance is rarely seen in public, and is usually performed by women for (or with) other women. A choreography will be taught once a great variety of Khaleegy moves, music and costuming has been explored.
All levels welcome.
Balkan Beats Remix
This contemporary Belly dance workshop fuses traditional Balkan gypsy moves with modern Egyptian Belly dance technique. The choreography taught (to music by Balkan Beats DJ Dunklebunt) features many unusual hip drop (Sohair Zaki funked up) variations and some dynamic flamenco flourishes that will be best enjoyed if participants are able to attend the workshop with a full layered gypsy circle skirt.
Intermediate to advanced level.
The workshops are available in one and two-hour sessions. Contact Underbelly for more information on availability, costing and availability.
