| NEW YEAR’S EVE WORLD CARNIVALE! Wednesday 31 December 2008 After the family fireworks at 9.15pm, Nicky Bomba and the Melbourne Ska Orchestra will rock the stage with their unique brand of Jamaican ska, funk and crazy beats. As the clock winds down, they will be joined by a range of special guests, featuring the best of Melbourne’s multicultural music scene from Jazz and funk to hip hop, an Ethiopian choir and African drumming. Underbelly performers Andrea Makris (Belly dance), Claudia Sangiorgi-Dalimore (Afro-Funk) and Malia Walsh (Circus) will grace the stage throughout the show, which will also be telecast live on Channel 7! | Rachel Brice Summer Intensive That’s right folks, you aren’t seeing things. Acclaimed US dancer RACHEL BRICE (The Indigo Bellydance Company, Belly Dance Superstars) returned to Melbourne in January 2008 to present a broad and comprehensive Summer Intensive Workshop Program. Rachel Brice’ s November 2006 Australian tour was extremely well received, with workshops receiving rave reviews and a spectacular show at the BMW Edge, Federation Square. The January 2008 Summer Intensive offered a rare opportunity for Australian dancers to study with Rachel Brice over an extended period of time in an intimate and local studio setting. Workshops included her famed Yoga & Drills, as well as technique and choreography based sessions. |

| PREVIOUS EVENTS: THE WESLEY ANNE 2007Even today in parts of North Africa and Egypt the zaar ritual continues as a means to appease the “djinn” - the mischievous or evil spirits residing in their human hosts. An affected person’s djinn are pacified by a manic shaking and writhing in response to the driving pounding of the drum.Throughout 2007, we mixed our djinn with tonic…Featured bands included: Melbourne’s Maestro’s of Eastern European music Babaganoush; passionate all-female-ensemble Guinee Berifee who played songs from the Mandinka Tribe; The Masters of Middle Eastern surf music The Reefers; Melbourne’s premier Balkans and Near-Eastern ensemble Zarafa and Melbourne’s Turkish and rootsy, gypsy band Unified Gecko. |
